What is Gondola Shelving.
In retail and merchandising, a gondola refers to a freestanding shelving fixture used to display products. It is one of the most common types of shelving systems found in supermarkets, convenience stores, pharmacies, and hardware stores.
Origin of the Term “Gondola”
The word “gondola” originally comes from the Italian “gondola”, referring to the narrow, flat-bottomed boats traditionally used in the canals of Venice. The term was later adopted in various industries to describe long, narrow, container-like structures — including train cars, cable lift cabins, and eventually, retail shelving.
In the context of retail, the shelving unit was called a “gondola” because of its long, narrow, and modular design, which resembled the elongated shape of a gondola boat or train car. This design allows for both maximum product visibility and accessibility from either side (in the case of double-sided units), much like how a gondola allows passengers to enter and exit easily from either side.
